Polar Bear Week: Update from Svalbard

Our partner Polar Bears International is now able to gather even more useful information about polar bears thanks to its new mini-cameras.

With their improved battery life, the cameras can record life in a polar bear birthing den for 30 days at a time. The insight this footage provides is indispensable for future conservation measures.

The annual Polar Bear Week is intended to draw attention to climate change and the importance of sea ice for polar bears. Rising global temperatures are causing the Arctic ice to melt, making the bears’ habitat increasingly unliveable. Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are helping fund Polar Bears International’s work on the ground. The non-profit conducts research into alterations to the bears’ breeding and hunting behaviour, as well as their preferred retreats and migration routes.
