Fluffy babies for our African penguins

To mark World Penguin Day, we thought we’d show you some images from our African penguin nesting burrows.

Female African penguins usually lay two eggs, which the parents take turns to incubate for about 40 days. A total of 16 African penguin chicks have hatched at the Tierpark in the past weeks. For the next few months, they will be cared for by their parents inside the burrows.

African penguins are endangered in their South African homeland. One reason for this is overfishing by humans. The penguins are having to travel further and further afield to find enough food for themselves and their chicks. To make matters worse, they frequently get tangled up in fishing nets.
