Precautionary measure: Berlin Zoo and Tierpark close

Reaction to confirmed case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Brandenburg

  • [Translate to English:]

On the eastern border of Berlin in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch-Oderland, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was officially detected on a farm on 10/01/2025. This is the first case in Germany since 1988. Foot-and-mouth disease is a viral disease that is dangerous for cloven-hoofed animals and is classified as a notifiable animal disease. FMD is not dangerous for humans, but humans can still transmit the virus, for example by clinging to clothing. The responsible authorities must take precautionary measures to quickly prevent the virus from spreading further. As an important preventive measure to protect the animals and prevent further spread, Zoo and Tierpark Berlin will remain closed for the time being from January 11, 2025 - after consultation with the authorities. The protection of the animals at Zoo and Tierpark Berlin has top priority. The team from the Department of Animal Health, Animal Welfare and Research is therefore in close contact with the relevant authorities.
