The baby elephant has a name

The waiting is over - the baby elephant at the animal park has a name!

The list is complete! Four clumsy feet, two flapping ears, a trunk that's into everything - all that was missing was the name. Mum Kewa (32 years old) had her little one 18 days ago at the Berlin animal park - and he's no longer anonymous...  At midday, 18.01.2016, the little bull elephant at the Berlin animal park was given the name Edgar.

The happy news was celebrated in just the right way: The elephant family tucked into a tasty rice cake with fruit, and Edgar was given his own lovely name plate, hung on the elephant enclosure.
Around 4,000 suggestions for names were sent to Radio TEDDY and the Berlin animal park during last week. "We were very pleased that so many people called in to suggest names - Radio TEDDY gave us a great deal of support by acting as a sponsor. Edgar really is a suitable name for our New Year offspring", says Dr. Andreas Knieriem, director at the animal park and zoo.

The playful pachyderm was born on New Year's morning, and is developing very well, having gained 20 kg in weight since then.  Mother elephant Kewa's milk not only tastes good, it produces results! Edgar will grow into a magnificent bull elephant weighing up to five tonnes, and could reach three metres in height.

Asian elephants are the largest land mammals on the Asian continent, native to tropical and sub-tropical monsoon rain forests, evergreen forests, deciduous forests and thorny shrub areas. The Asian elephant is categorised as highly endangered - there are still quite a large number of domesticated and working elephants in South-East Asia, but these impressive animals are only rarely encountered in the wild.

The Berlin animal park currently has seven Asian and six African elephants.
