Walking tall

As well as zebras, gazelles and wildebeest, our African Savannah is home to North African ostriches.

These magnificent birds – the largest on Earth – strut around on powerful legs and feet that enable them to reach speeds of up to 65 kmph.

Three North African ostriches live on our savannah landscape. In February, one-year-old Tono and his sister Beate joined us from Zoobotánico Jerez in Cádiz, while female Ellen came here from Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna. At the age of three, Ellen is the oldest of the group.
