We served up stuffed pumpkin, which was particularly appreciated by female leopard Layla. You can visit the “ghosts of the mountains” in our Himalayan habitat.
Snow leopards are endangered due to poaching, a decline in prey numbers, and changes to their natural habitat wrought by humans. We are working with nature conservation society NABU to protect the species in Central Asia. NABU has been conducting active conservation work there since 1999, with measures including anti-poaching initiatives, environmental education, scientific research, and a rehabilitation centre for injured animals. Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are funding the creation of a second anti-poaching unit in southern Kyrgyzstan. Soon, camera traps will also be set up in that part of the country to establish a nationwide snow leopard monitoring programme. In the long term, these efforts should result in a decline in poaching and illegal wildlife trading.
