Since his birth about a month ago, little Kai has been a welcome playmate for Theresa – two months his senior – and a delightful addition to the herd.

The IUCN Red List classifies the Przewalski’s horse as “Endangered”. In the late 1960s, these wild horses were declared extinct in their natural habitat on the Asian steppes. Humans were largely responsible for their decimation in the wild.

An international conservation breeding programme ensured the horse’s survival in captivity. Since 1963, Tierpark Berlin has been involved in the breeding and reintroduction of Przewalski’s horses. To date, a total of 17 Przewalski’s horses born at Tierpark Berlin have been reintroduced in their ancestral homeland.
