Naming Challenge for the Tiger Sponsors

Berliner Sparkasse generously sponsors the tiger quadruplets. Raisa, Olga, Aljoscha, Kirill, Natalja … how should we call the eight week-old Amur tiger quadruplets.?

Dr. Johannes Evers, CEO of Berliner Sparkasse and new member of the Supervisory Board of the Zoologischer Garten Berlin AG visited his new fosterlings in the Tierpark on Friday. Berliner Sparkasse has decided to sponsor the Amur tiger quadruplets and wants to call on its customers to submit name suggestions for the one male Amur baby tiger and his three sisters. Due to their Siberian roots, their names should be as Russian as possible.

The bunch of rascals were born on 23 April 2015 in Tierpark Berlin. Tiger mother Aurora (5 years) has sufficient milk for the first time and is able to bring up her offspring alone without the aid of the animal keepers. The mother's milk has helped the quadruplets reach a weight of approx. eight kilos and they are getting more mobile with each day: Their growl is coming on and their growing paws now even look a touch intimidating as they lumber through the enclosure. Apart from that, playing and frolicking about is just as important to them as cuddling up to mum Aurora! Yet if they want to grow up to be big and strong, a little rest is just as vital.

The tiger parents (Aurora and dad Darius, 9 years' old) are part of the European Endangered Species Programme and are extremely important for the Amur tiger population due to their ancestry. A total of 134 Amur tiger offspring have been born in the Tierpark, an enormously important contribution for these critically endangered tiger subspecies.

Amur tigers, which are also known as Siberian tigers, are the largest living cats on Earth. They populate the taiga forests in the extreme southeast of Russia, roaming the grounds as far as the borders with China and North Korea. Their population these days only amounts to around 450 animals, this is due to the hunting of the animals on a massive scale as well as the destruction of their habitat in the 1940s.

"We are delighted that Berliner Sparkasse took out a sponsorship for our four little cats and in doing so, have made an important contribution to the management of the animals. We are now excited to see what name suggestions customers of Berliner Sparkasse can come up with", says Tierpark director Dr. Andreas Knieriem.

Dr. Johannes Evers knows: "The Tierpark is always good for a nice day out – both for tourists and for Berliners themselves. Especially, of course, when it means: We have new blood. It's clear that the employees are committed to helping to preserve the species diversity here. I hope that Berliner Sparkasse's sponsorship will also make a small difference to the cause."
