Happy International Pallas’s Cat Day!

The Tierpark is home to three of these rather grumpy-looking cats, which are also known as manuls. Two of them can be found in our Himalayan area.

This February, a young female moved from Dierenpark ZiE-Zoo in the Netherlands to join our male, Chengdu.

The population of Pallas’s cats in their natural habitat in Asia is steadily decreasing, mainly as a result of habitat loss, poaching, poisoning of prey, and the encroachment of human beings. The Pallas’s cat International Conservation Alliance (PICA) educates local people about this small wild cat and the threat posed by humans. Tierpark Berlin is supporting this important project.

By the way, our older female Pallas’s cat Maneki-neko, who previously lived with Chengdu, has now moved to her “retirement home” across from the yellow-throated martens. This way, the elderly lady gets her peace and quiet and the newly enamoured couple can enjoy some time alone together.
