Good things take time

The transformation of the former Pachyderm House into Europe’s most modern elephant habitat is truly a mammoth project!

With an indoor surface area of 7,000 m², it will be Berlin’s largest animal house. As the Alfred Brehm building project demonstrated all too vividly, redeveloping and upgrading an existing building can be much more complicated and time-consuming than demolishing it and starting from scratch. However, in the interests of sustainability it was important to us to modify the existing structure rather than build a new one. Unexpected events such as the pandemic and the war in Ukraine delayed work on the Tierpark’s largest construction site at a crucial moment in the process. That means the new home for African elephants will open much later than originally planned.

A construction project is always an adventure, and we invite you to watch this one unfold as you make your way through the African Savannah. However long it takes, we are sure of one thing: good things come to those who wait.
