Berlin’s Education Senator visits the Tierpark

Getting schooled

On 23 September, Tierpark Berlin welcomed Berlin’s Senator for Education Astrid-Sabine Busse to the Tierpark School, where Zoo and Tierpark Director Dr Andreas Knieriem and other staff members informed her about the wide range of educational activities offered by the extra-curricular learning centre. In addition to numerous guided tours for schools, day-care centres and after-school groups, the Tierpark School also offers private tours for children (including as part of birthday parties), a regular school holiday activities programme, and the Youth Club for primary school children. An educational nature trail is currently being created in the garden next to the Tierpark School. Here, children will be able to independently explore nature and uncover some of its secrets. Ms Busse was particularly interested in the various interactive learning stations along the nature trail. Ideas for how the Tierpark School might be developed further to play a greater role across the city in the future were discussed in comprehensive talks involving specially commissioned teachers from the Tierpark School. Ms Busse rounded off her visit with an exclusive New World porcupine feeding session. The Tierpark School staff are very much looking forward to her next visit!
