Another step towards normality at Berlin’s zoos

Free-flight show restarts and animal houses reopen at Zoo and Tierpark Berlin

Aquarium Berlin reopened last weekend after being closed for 15 long weeks. Now, many of the animal houses at Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are following suit. “We are delighted that the Berlin Senate’s new rules have allowed us to reopen our animal houses,” says Zoo and Tierpark Director Dr Andreas Knieriem. “These buildings also provide our guests with places to retreat to in case of rain or extreme heat.” At the Zoo, the Hippo House, World of Birds, Primate House, Pheasantry and Antelope House all reopen on 30 June. At the Tierpark, the Giraffe House and Primate House can now welcome visitors once more. Face masks must be worn inside all animal houses. In addition, a minimum distance of 1.5 metres must be observed between visitors, and the glass panels and other surfaces should not be touched

The Tierpark’s free-flight show also starts up again on 30 June. At 1:30 p.m. every day except Mondays, buzzards, bald eagles and more will swoop over guests’ heads once again at the Kiekemal woodland stage. All spectators are requested to arrive on time and to leave enough space between other people in the stands. On-site staff will also remind visitors of the social distancing measures.

Zoo and Tierpark Berlin are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., and as late as 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays until 17 July. These longer hours give visitors the chance to experience picturesque summer-evening scenes that are not usually witnessed by the public. Aquarium Berlin is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
