Red Panda

Ailurus fulgens fulgens

The easy life?

You might think that Red pandas lead a life of luxury when you hear that they spend almost all their time eating or sleeping. But they don’t have time for much else. The Red panda’s diet primarily consists of bamboo, which is very low in calories. That means Red pandas have to eat an awful lot of their favourite food in order to get enough energy.

Anti-slip socks

Red pandas have thick hair on the soles of their feet. This layer of hair not only helps to keep their paws warm when they walk over ice and snow – it also helps them to grip. That’s a very practical aid when you have to clamber along damp, slippery branches.

Did you know?

Red pandas have an elongated bone on their wrists that they
can use like a second thumb to help them hold on to branches.
