Gerenuk Tayo Passes Away Unexpectedly

The eight-month-old gerenuk Tayo unexpectedly died on the afternoon of 30 September 2015 in Tierpark Berlin. As shown by preliminary investigation results by the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW), the sudden death is due to complications in the forestomach. Further investigations by the pathology department of the IZW should promptly discern the details concerning the cause of this disease. All other Gerenuks on the site are in good health.

Tayo was the first gerenuk birth in Europe for 49 years. The gentle gerenuk boy was born in the Tierpark on 27 February 2015 – his parents are Amelia (born 23.12.2011) and Jess (born 15.06.2012, now living in Zoo Berlin) from Zoo Los Angeles.

Tayo's birth was the result of successful, international cooperation: Tierpark Berlin received Southern Gerenuks from Los Angeles and Zoo Phoenix in May 2013 as part of the North American conservation breeding programme for Gerenuks.

Five gerenuks currently live in Tierpark Berlin. Jack (born 16.09.2007 in Zoo Phoenix), Amelia (born 23.12.2011), Bonnie (born 21.07.2010 in Zoo Miami), Cocoa (born 15.11.2013 in Zoo Los Angeles) and Priscilla (born 20.07.2014 in Zoo Los Angeles) are the only species of gerenuk that live in Europe, in addition to the two living in Zoo Berlin.
