African wild dogs are excellent sprinters. They chase their prey over long distances, reaching speeds of up to 55 km/h. Once the hunted animal is exhausted, the pack attacks. Their diet consists mainly of antelopes and warthogs.

The name Lycaon pictus translates to “painted dog” – how fitting! Every African wild dog has a fur pattern that is as unique as a fingerprint. This is very useful for researchers, as it allows them to clearly identify individuals only by using photos.
