On the night of 25 November, three maned wolf pups came into the world at Tierpark Berlin – two males and one female. After three months spent building up their strength in the birthing den, they have now finally gone on their first outing with mum Lucia. The siblings certainly have plenty of energy, and had great fun exploring their habitat in the sun. They are still a little unsteady on their long, stilt-like legs but will soon get the hang of it. Maned wolves are actually known for their slightly off-kilter walk: they have what is known as an “ambling gait”, which means they lift both limbs on one side of the body at the same time. So for these canines – the largest wild dogs in South America – learning to walk can take some practice!

You can see our lively pups every day in their outdoor habitat next to the Alfred Brehm building. A little hint: maned wolves mark their territory with strong-smelling urine, so just follow your nose!
