HEAD AND SHOULDERS ABOVE THE REST

Gerenuks have long necks and long legs, which gives them a distinct advantage over other antelope species.

The ability to reach leaves growing higher up in the trees means gerenuks don’t have as much competition for their favourite foods. To reach even higher, they stand on their hind legs and place their front hooves against the tree trunk for support. Even calves quickly master the trick: after around a month, they can already stand on their hind legs.
