Otter Island

At Otter Island there’s lots going on in the water, on the land, and high up in the trees. The Tierpark’s exciting new animal habitat provides insight into one of the last unexplored areas of wilderness – in faraway Indonesia, an incredible biodiversity hotspot. The Indonesian island of Sulawesi is particularly well known for its many endemic species – creatures that are found only there and nowhere else on Earth. About two-thirds of the mammal species on Sulawesi are endemic.

A lively shared home

Sulawesi’s threatened mammal species include the babirusa, the small-clawed otter, and the rare crested macaque, which is critically endangered. At Tierpark Berlin, these very different species now share a common home – making things more interesting for animals and visitors alike! The unusual grouping is intended to promote interspecies interaction. At Otter Island, Tierpark visitors can now experience water, land and tree dwellers together in a single habitat.
