Crocuta crocuta

(Spotted Hyena)

Africa, South of the Sahara

Zebras, gnus, gazelles, birds,
small mammals, carrion

45–55 kg, sometimes up to 86 kg

Brooding/gestation time:
approx. 110 days

Achievable age
approx. 25 years

Persistent hunter
Spotted hyenas are stuck with the preconception that they are the “salvors” of the Savanna, but there is less carrion on their menu than we think. The skilled pack hunters capture around 3/4 of their food themselves. With their very powerful bite, spotted hyenas can even bite through and eat bones.

Did you know that?

  • Females are the dominant sex. The “boss” and her adult daughters lead the pack.
  • It is difficult to distinguish between males and females. Females have a pseudo penis and testicles.
